Seth Turner Crawford collection, 1786-1939.

Personal correspondence of the Seth Turner family of Randolph, Mass. and the Manahan family of New Hampshire and Washington, D.C., consisting primarily of letters to Ellen M. Turner and Charlotte Turner from their father, Joseph Manahan, a clerk at the U.S. Treasury Dept. Also deeds, commissions, inventories, surveys and other papers concerning the military career of Seth Turner (1756-1842), his son Royal Turner, a Randolph surveyor, and grandson Seth Turner (1821-1883), a Randolph banker and philanthropist. Included are papers relating to the founding in 1875 of the Turner Free Library. Also two letters dated 1839 and 1845 from President Franklin Pierce to Joseph Manahan. (Cont'd) The collection also contains three daybooks (1816, 1823-25) kept by Royal Turner as a merchant in Randolph with the firms of Bass & Turner and Turner & Tolman, and a cashbook of the National Hide & Leather Bank of Boston (1894-98).

Prior to his presidency he served in both the House of Representatives (1833-1837) and the Senate (1837-1842) as a legislator from New Hampshire.
